5th Grade students learned the basics in proportion and placement of features related to portrait drawing. This was a mini lesson that was the precursor to the wire portrait project. Students were asked to draw a portrait first without any instruction, then we drew on together, step-by-step. The improvement in their drawings was amazing!

Lesson Objectives—Students will be able to....
- Identify who Alexander Calder is and two artworks he has created.
- Identify what a self-portrait is.
- Create a self-portrait drawing with incorrect proportions using simple outlines of features.
- Create a self-portrait drawing with correct proportions using simple outlines of features.
- Create a simple wire portrait using Twisteez wire.
6th Grade Graffiti Name Design
Lesson Objectives—Students will be able to....
- Identify street art.
- Identify the difference between graffiti and murals.
- Explain why illegal graffiti is not acceptable.
- Identify the graffiti ‘style’.
- Create a brick background using sponge stamping.
- Create a name ‘tag’ design using bubble letters in a selected style.
- Apply a 3D shadow behind name.
- Apply a set of analogous colors creatively inside the ‘tag’ with oil pastels.
- (optional) Apply splatters of paint with matching analogous colors to name on top of project.
5th Grade Paper Molas
Lesson Objectives—Students will be able to....
- Identify a Mola and recall basic information about how the Kuna Indians create them.
- Select an animal that symbolizes personality traits of your choice.
- Use simple shapes to draw a contour line outline of an animal.
- Identify analogous and complementary color schemes.
- Apply an analogous color scheme inside the focal point of your mola using oil pastels and blending.
- Sew a simple running stitch around the outside of the mola focal point.
- Create an abstract design using complementary colors with oil pastel for the background of the mola.
6th Grade Radial Color Wheels
Lesson Objectives—Students will be able to....
- Identify and create a design with radial symmetry.
- Identify the primary colors and mix those to create the secondary and intermediate colors.
- Identify what a hue is.
- Identify and create tints and shades of various colors.
- Neatly paint a radial design as a color wheel with a hue, tint, and shade in the 12 colors of a color wheel.
- Modify an image of the color wheel using the apps Wordfoto and Percolator.
